International Women’s Day 2022

Happy IWD! Today, we’re celebrating the social, economic, and political achievements of women.

2022 theme: #BreakTheBias

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed globally for over a century as a celebration, as well as a rally for gender equity. IWD was started by working women for issues including fair wages and hours – issues that indeed remain relevant to our workplaces today. See this historical timeline of IWD, beginning in 1908.

This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. Building awareness of our biases is part of our everyday work, and today we are intentionally focusing on biases that impact women

Using an Intersectional Approach

The theory of intersectionality was coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, UCLA law professor and civil rights activist.

We know that there is no singular woman's experience. Women’s experiences differ and depend on their relationships to the structures around them. These relationships are determined by the various factors that form their identities, otherwise known as intersections. This framework of intersectionality was developed by Black feminists and activists who highlighted how their experiences of oppression differed from the experiences of white women.

By using an intersectional lens when considering our gender biases, or doing any EDI work, we avoid overgeneralizing people’s diverse lived experiences and reinforcing and obscuring inequalities.
